Wonder Everywhere
In a recent interview at the start of this New Year, I was asked what my “take-away” was in light of the startling ride of 2020. I actually found it to be a tough question. There were so many lessons learned when the rug was pulled out from under us all and things came tumbling down. I found it difficult to pin down one thing. But after some thought, one rose to the surface.
There’s wonder everywhere if you have the eyes to see it.
Being a homebody at heart, the series of stay-at-home orders meshed with my natural tendency to…well…stay at home. I am honestly just as content cozying up on my sofa in front of the fire as I am exploring distant lands. I confess, I have put some special effort into the beauty of my surroundings, both inside and outside. I’ve learned that aesthetics affect human emotions. Simply said ~ “Beautiful surroundings just make me feel good!”
To that end, I am just as happy settling into my intentionally designed, comfortable living room at the finish of a long workday as I am checking into a well-appointed hotel room.
But even as a dyed-in-the-wool nester, I must admit, the past year has been tough. Restlessness crept in as never before and anxiety became a more regular companion than usual. Note: I always have a touch of anxiety, but this was definitely a touch more!
Also, as a businesswoman and professional in the entertainment industry, most of my travels involve events that I generally look forward to. There are always new sights to see, knowledge to gain, and new people to meet. So, even though I desperately hate packing, I found myself eyeing my travel bag, longing for new adventures.
Yet, wanting to be responsible, my husband Amick and I exercised self-restraint in respect to the stay at home orders, and that’s when “the mother of invention” stepped in! Out of necessity to tame those savage beasts of anxiety and restlessness we made the decision to more deeply explore and enjoy what was reasonably nearby. The list is long as to what we discovered, and even rediscovered, starting in our own backyard!
A handsome teak bench hidden on our back patio was repositioned to view the sunlit mountains during colorful California sunsets. Picnic lunches at local parks took the place of date nights and also became a favorite spot for family celebrations. Drives to the beach just to feel our feet in the sand and listen to the sound of the ocean, replaced concert going at the Hollywood Bowl or Disney Hall.
Even more importantly, there was the deepening of already established relationships as we kept our social circle small. Instead of running around exploring the sights, we discovered more of each other. Instead of filling our camera with pictures of far away places, we had meaningful photo opportunities with the people who matter most. We celebrated life together creating lasting memories for generations to come. Bottom line…
The shutdowns didn’t shutdown the wonder all around us!
I believe we convince ourselves that we have to go across the world to have exciting experiences. But if you take the time to look around, you’re sure to find wonder right where you are.
The Bible tells us that one of the best places to find “Wonder” is in our remembrance of the good things God has done. Psalm 105:5 says, “Remember the wonders He has performed, His miracles and the rulings He has given…” This beautiful Psalm also tells us that we are to sing of God’s wonderful deeds out-loud in song. It’s amazing the wonder you can experience in your spirit just through expressions of gratitude and singing. And guess what? You can do that anytime, anywhere!
I don’t negate the joy of adventure, but the lasting depth of family, friends, and memories in your home, your neighborhood or your own backyard, will be what you treasure most. So remember…
There’s no need to wander in order to experience wonder!
Where will you find wonder today?
